vol.016 / Round-trip Letters
Miyu Otani (Model) × Asako Toki (Singer)
Two people exchange everyday thoughts about Tokyo.
2017.04.12
It’s raining today. I’m on my way back from a radio recording, writing this letter while I drink some coffee in a chain coffee shop in Hanzomon. A song I don’t know is playing. Maybe a song from the 60s. It’s a good song.
Reading your letter, I could imagine you in your teens.
I used to go to a lot of live music clubs as well when I was young. If I suddenly spotted a fashionable girl alone in the crowd of people on the lit-up floor, I would imagine where she came from; which songs she liked; whether she was the girlfriend of a band member; what she was thinking as she listened to the music, etc. with a feeling like empathy — or maybe something similar to idolization for some reason.
Idolizing someone you don’t know is a bit strange, but I really like the feeling.
Maybe that’s where the observational style of lyrics I write now comes from. Having your heart stolen by a passer-by, whether they are a woman, a man, an adult or a child, and for a moment feeling longing for that life. Maybe that’s something you only feel somewhere jammed with people like Tokyo.
I see you on Instagram on a daily basis but for me you’re still a stranger, like those girls in the live music clubs of the past. I consider these to be moments of luxury, when you don’t know someone.
You’ve got the thrill ahead of getting to know someone, as well as the pleasure of being known!
I’m glad we’ve gotten to know each other a little through our correspondence.
Let’s go eat curry.
Let’s also celebrate being born in March.
I’m excited now. I’m going to leave here soon.
Before that though, I’m going to find out what that song playing in the background was.
