Two people exchange everyday thoughts about Tokyo.

Inui-san,
It certainly feels wintery all of a sudden, doesn’t it? Until quite recently I was in a T-shirt and shorts, but I’m wearing a thin duffle coat while I’m out writing this.
Yes. If I’m not careful I soon feel a cold coming on. At times like these I always eat plenty of green onions and meat. In Ogikubo there’s a place with a yellow sign saying “Hand-pulled ramen”. The noodle dishes there are loaded with green onion, meat, garlic and ginger, and I scarf them down before I get a proper cold.
Incidentally, even though this restaurant is a ramen joint, for some reason they give you pickled ginger. You know, like in a sushi place. It’s good, though. This is another place I’d like to go to with you.
The “angry man on the phone” story was just like something out of Crack Iron Albatrossket. I laughed when I read it.
I think graphics on shirts are a bit strange. I’d feel rather silly if I was wearing a shirt with a necktie printed on it. Well if it was a T-shirt it might be okay, but shirts don’t need to be “cute” in my opinion.
Generally-speaking if you’re going to have graphics on your clothes you have to really mean it.
The other day I saw a piece in a magazine or something, defiantly urging people to wear a band T-shirt even if they didn’t know the band. I have to say it gave me a thrill.
With those T-shirts it’s like walking around wearing a poster. But if I see one of those guys walking around wearing a poster, I still think it’s uber cool in any case.
Inui-san, what’s your favorite T-shirt like?
Uh-oh, this isn’t good. I took my time getting started, and now we’re almost at the end.
We still haven’t managed to go drinking yet, although we keep saying we will. There are still some good places in Nishi Shinjuku so let’s definitely go. There’s much more to it than karaoke bars with live bands, and gaudy curry houses full of scary types.
Since we’re here, can I ask you to at least choose the place for our next drinking session? I’ll drive there and hire a designated driver for the way back, so anywhere is okay.
As I was writing, it somehow came back to me that we often meet at extreme times; in the height of summer when it’s boiling, or the depths of winter when it’s freezing.
There are moments in winter when cigarettes are a real pleasure — this is the only thing about winter that makes me happy. What do you like about winter, Inui-san?
You can tell me next time we meet. See you very soon!
